Are maintenance staff required to be trained in Bloodborne Pathogens, since they may have occupational exposure to body fluids?
You might reasonably think that the answer would unhesitatingly be 'yes', but this is not necessarily so. Cal-OSHA defines anyone involved in maintenance of a fixed structure as being in the Construction field, and Construction workers are exempt from the Bloodborne Pathogens standard. This is the case even when they are in office buildings where construction is complete.
However, there would be a strong case of liability if a worker with potential exposure is not trained and there is an exposure incident. It would be wise for an employer to assess risks of exposure, provide PPE, have a policy for reporting exposures and provide training.
